Hublot and Nespresso have united coffee and watch lovers worldwide with their new Big Bang Unico, made from recycled aluminum capsules and coffee grounds.
Hublot and Nespresso, two Swiss icons with a shared passion for innovation, sustainability, and excellence, have come together on a pioneering project to create the world’s first Big Bang timepiece based on recycling and circularity.
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin watch results from a year-long collaboration between Hublot and Nespresso. It is a symbol of the brands’ commitment to environmental sustainability and their determination to create beautiful and functional products.
Over the last seven years, Nespresso has collaborated with top-notch Swiss brands to develop novel products from utilized aluminum capsules, all of which are part of its Second Life programs. And now, through the partnership with Hublot, the coffee company has taken things one step further, creating a watch that is not only sustainable but also a true masterpiece of design and engineering.
The watch is made using recycled Nespresso aluminum capsules and coffee grounds. The aluminum capsules are transformed into the watch case, the bezel, the crown, and the pusher. The recycled coffee grounds are used to make the watch straps available in rubber and fabric options. The rubber strap is a blend of recycled white rubber and coffee grounds, while the fabric strap is made from Scafé, a 100% recycled fabric composed of 5% coffee grounds and 95% recycled polyester.
Hublot’s patented One Click interchangeable strap system allows the wearer to easily switch between the two strap options, making the watch both practical and versatile. The straps are available in a vibrant green color, a nod to the Master Origins Peru Organic capsule and Nespresso’s iconic “N” engraved on the crown.
Creating a watch that is both sustainable and beautiful is no easy feat. It took Hublot and Nespresso a year of research and development to achieve the perfect harmony of colors between the seven different materials that make up the watch. This includes the anodized aluminum, the varnish on the dial and hands, the Hublot logo decal on the glass, the rubber of the strap, and the fabric, lining, and hook & loop tape of the Velcro strap. They also had to ensure that this uniformity of color would stand the test of time.
In addition to the watch itself, the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin comes in a brand new case developed by Hublot, the Greenbox case. This is a reusable item made entirely from oak, including its hinges. The sourcing and manufacture of the wood promote short supply chains, and the case is designed to be eco-friendly and made from recycled fabrics, plastic yarns, and PET. The Greenbox case is specially decorated with the two brands’ logos, affixed using coffee grounds.
The collaboration between Hublot and Nespresso is a testament to what can be achieved when two brands share a common goal. Using recycled materials has shown that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand. And with the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin, they have created a watch that is not only beautiful but also makes a positive contribution to the planet.
