Behind the scenes

Panerai offers three watches with exclusive adventures

If you are looking for both a new watch and a holiday adventure, Panerai may have just the thing for you.

Panerai recently unveiled a series of new watches that come with a unique, once-in-a-lifetime adventure for watch-loving daredevils. There is a choice between an Arctic adventure with the famous explorer Mike Horn, an experience with freediver Guillaume Néry a world champion free diver in French Polynesia, or if that isn’t thrilling enough, how about a week training with the Italian marines’ commando unit?

the Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition

The Mike Horn adventure will be led by Mike Horn himself, who will accompany 19 people, and their brand-new special edition Panerai Submersibles, across the Arctic. Mike Horn is one of the greatest living explorers, having spent years traveling to some of the world’s most amazing, yet extreme places. He is an adventurer, but also an ambassador for the planet. During this trip, the owners of the new watch will learn about nature and how to safeguard it, while spending a few days of intensive training in the ice floes of the Arctic.

Arctic Expedition

The timepiece is the Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition and is available in Panerai boutiques. This limited edition is very different from other watches in the Panerai Submersible collection as it features a strap made of recycled PET and has a unique blue luminous coating on the dial and rotating bezel in reference to the sea. It comes in a 47mm EcoTitanium™ case and is powered by the brand’s P. 9010 automatic movement with a 72-hour power reserve.

Guillaume Néry is a world record breaking freediver who has dived without weight to a depth of 126 meters. He is also famous for his incredible underwater photography and video. The new owners of the Panerai Submersible Chrono Guillaume Néry Edition will join the freediver in Moorea, French Polynesia, where he lives and works. There are only 15 watches and 15 places on this special experience. The trip will involve deep-sea diving with Néry as well as the opportunity for whale watching.

French Polynesia

The timepiece is, of course, a professional divers’ watch, water resistant to 300 meters and fitted with a rotating bezel and an applied black ceramic disc. The dial is extremely legible with white luminous markers against a blue and black textured background. Touches of turquoise on the markers and hands are a nod to the color of the waters in Polynesia. The titanium case is coated with a layer of black DLC and comes in a size of 47mm. The Panerai Submersible Chrono Guillaume Néry Edition is also a precision chronograph, with flyback function and a device for zeroing the seconds hand to achieve perfect synchronisation with a reference signal. It is powered by the P.9100 automatic calibre, with a power reserve of three days.

The third timepiece is reserved for those who want to spend a week in the skin of an Italian special forces soldier, training with them and seeing what life is like as as an elite marine. Panerai has a long history with the Italian special forces as it provided them with timepieces for decades. Today, Panerai continues to produce robust timepieces that evoke the tough spirit of the Italian forces. The 33 owners of the new Panerai Submersible Marina Militare CarboTech™ will have the opportunity to train with the Comsubin, the diving and commando group of the Italian navy. This is a money-can’t-buy experience (well, unless you buy the watch, of course). The number 33 was chosen as this is the number of gold medals won for military valor by the unit.

The timepiece comes in a stealth all-black design, which is highlighted by luminous green touches, which makes the hands, hour markers and rotating bezel extremely legible at night. The 47mm case comes in carbon fiber which is both lighter than titanium and stronger than stainless steel. The dial is also made of carbon and has a date at three o’clock and a small seconds at 9 o’clock. The watch is powered by the P.9010 automatic caliber with a 72-hour power reserve.

This unique idea to link watches to exceptional experiences will surely be the shape of things to come as watch brands find new ways to make their clients dream just that little bit more.
