Valentine’s Day is a celebration of romance that dates back to Roman times. It all began with the festival of Lupercalia which was held in mid-February and celebrated the arrival of spring and fertility rites. Today, lovers mark the occasion by exchanging cards and gifts. Different countries celebrate Valentine’s Day in interesting ways. In the United Kingdom, for example, it is customary to send anonymous cards to the one you love to get them guessing who their admirer is; while in Ghana, February 14th is also National Chocolate Day, celebrating love and the country’s cacao industry; and in Bulgaria, lovers celebrate by sharing a bottle of wine.
For watch lovers, there are plenty of ways to show your affection with a Valentine’s Day timepiece. Here are five of our favorites to inspire you.
Backes & Strauss
Backes & Strauss is celebrating Valentine’s Day with two unique pieces. The first comes in a 37mm white gold case with an automatic movement, while the second is slightly smaller at 33mm and is fitted with a quartz movement. Both come with this fabulous diamond-paved dial, which allows the discerning eye to perceive the hidden image of a heart on the dial depending on the angle of observance.
Blancpain celebrates love with this re-edition of a timepiece that was once owned by Marilyn Monroe. Available in a limited edition of 14 pieces, this Art Deco cocktail watch comes adorned with a mother-of-pearl dial and an array of diamonds and rubies. The timepiece is powered by the brand’s rectangular mechanical caliber 510, a new movement for Blancpain.
Glashütte Original presents a romantic new PanoMatic Luna ladies’ timepiece for Valentine’s Day in hues of violet and purple. The dial of the Panomatic Luna timepiece is particularly eye-catching with its diamond-set rod indexes and lilac Arabic numerals forming a heart at the center. Limited to 25 pieces only, it features the brand’s automatic caliber 90-12 with refined decorative finishes in keeping with its romantic design.
This new Millenary Frosted Gold Philosphique was inspired by the aesthetics of 17th-century single-hand timepieces and features a single hour hand that travels around the dial in an elliptical trajectory. It is available in hammered and satin-finished white or pink gold and comes with a blue hammered dial for the white gold version and a brown hammered dial for the rose gold version. Both timepieces are powered by the brand’s automatic manufacture caliber 3140.
Piaget is presenting a beautiful selection of both watches and jewelry for Valentine’s Day. One timepiece that caught our eye was the Possession Bracelet watch with this dark pink dial with diamond-dot indexes. The timepiece is housed in a rose gold case set with 57 round white diamonds (approx. 1.56 carats) and is powered by a quartz movement. It is available with a matching dark pink alligator strap or a white strap, offering two very different looks for this romantic wristwatch.
