Ressence Watches

Founded in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2010 by Benoit Mintiens, this independent watch brand caused quite a stir when it revealed itself to the world thanks to its patented time display. Essentially all of the dial elements exist on one surface under the sapphire crystal and float on a mechanical display module comprised of a thick liquid and discs and rings that rotate. Even the entire dial rotates on itself. The Ressence watch features a pressure valve to compensate for temperature changes so the liquid doesn’t get too hot or cold. The concept confounds some and enthralls others. It is a love or hate relationship with Ressence, thankfully with most watch lovers smiling.

History of Ressence

Ressence was founded in 2009 by Belgian industrial designer Benoît Mintiens and has quickly risen to prominence in the world of horology with its innovative approach to watchmaking. Drawing from his background in industrial design, Mintiens sought to challenge the conventions of traditional watch design and create timepieces that were visually striking and functionally intuitive.

The brand’s debut collection in 2010 introduced the R1 and R2 models, which immediately caught the attention of watch enthusiasts and industry insiders alike. At the heart of these timepieces was the patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS), a revolutionary display mechanism that replaced traditional hands with rotating discs and spheres. This unique system not only provided a fresh perspective on timekeeping but also offered improved readability.

Ressence continued to push the boundaries of watch design with subsequent releases, including the groundbreaking Type 3 in 2013. This model featured an innovative oil-filled dial that eliminated distortion and created a mesmerizing visual effect. The following year saw the introduction of the Type 5, a rugged and durable timepiece designed for diving enthusiasts.

Through a combination of innovation, craftsmanship, and a dedication to pushing the boundaries of watchmaking, Ressence has earned its place as a leading force in the industry. With each new release, the brand continues to captivate enthusiasts and collectors with its bold designs and forward-thinking approach.
