H. Moser & Cie Watches

In 1828, Swiss-born Heinrich Moser founded the original H. Moser & Cie company in St. Petersburg, Russia. After returning home to Schaffhausen, Switzerland in 1848, he established his company there. In the early 2000s,  the brand name was resurrected, and, today, it is independently owned and family-run by the MELB Holding Group, owned by the Meylan family. Every watch is made in-house in Schaffhausen and each is hand finished and hand-assembled to exacting standards. H. Moser is known as a  luxury brand that thinks outside of the proverbial box in terms of design and color.

History of H. Moser & Cie

Heinrich Moser was born in 1805 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. His family were watchmakers, and Heinrich followed in their footsteps. A young entrepreneur with dreams of greatness, he decided to move to Saint Petersburg to earn a reputation as a master watchmaker. He established H. Moser & Cie in 1828, a mere year after he arrived in Russia. His name soon became a symbol of elegance and quality with notable clients such as Russian princes and the Russian Imperial court. In 1848 he returned to Schaffhausen and built a factory that employed several hundred artisans and watchmakers. His watches ranged from simple three-hand to very complicated watches. He died in 1874, having produced an estimated 500,000 watches in his lifetime. The company was sold as none of his descendants were interested in taking over the company. When the quartz crisis hit in the 70s, the name disappeared.

H. Moser Today

In 2002 Dr. Jürgen Lange founded Moser Schaffhausen together with Heinrich Moser’s great-grandson Roger Nicholas Balsiger. In 2005 a brand new manufacture was established in Heinrich Moser’s birth town, Schaffhausen, and the name H. Moser & Cie was brought back. The Meylan family acquired H. Moser & Cie in 2012 and today produce about 1,500 watches a year.

Integrated Manufacture

H. Moser & Cie. has a wholly integrated manufacture which ensures that every hand-made watch corresponds to the brand’s values. They design and produce their own in-house mechanical movements and, in 2007, developed the Straumann Hairspring with Precision Engineering AG. Their tag line is “Very Rare,” and their watches are real works of art.

Who owns H. Moser & Cie?

The MELB holding company, owned by the Meylan family, acquired H. Moser & Cie in 2012. H. Moser & Cie remains one of the rare independent, family-owned, and run watch companies.

Fun Fact

Every year since 2016, H. Moser & Cie present an exceptional watch to raise awareness on subjects they hold dear. The first watch, the Swiss Alps Watch Zzzz, was a parody of the Apple Watch. The second Swiss Mad watch was made of cheese, the third, the Swiss Icons Watch, was a parody of recognizable features from well-known Swiss watch manufacturers, and the last one was the Moser Nature Watch, completely covered in Swiss plants.
