Limited edition of 28 pieces
Jaquet Droz Loving Butterfly Automaton takes its place in eternity.
Jaquet Droz is one of the only watchmakers in the world that crafts automatons. This latest version of the Loving Butterfly Automaton in 43mm red gold is available in a limited edition of only 28 pieces.
The dial is crafted from wood petrified 140-180 million years ago called Chinchilla Red, named after the far-eastern locale in Australia where it is found. The product is an exceedingly rare and dense mineral. It takes countless hours of manual work just to make the surface smooth. The off-center sub-dial is in black onyx.
The animated objet d’art is inspired by a drawing titled Le papillon conduit par l’amour (Butterfly Driven by Love), which was sketched in 1774 by The Draughtsman, an automaton created by Henri- Louis Jaquet-Droz. The Cherub and the Butterfly both classic metaphors for labors of love, where the chariot symbolizes victory and the butterfly represent Cupid. Both the chariot and the butterfly are made up of dozens of stationary and moving appliques hand etched by the Jaquet Droz artisan jewelers. The butterfly’s wings flutter and the wheels on the chariot turn. The backdrop is entirely crafted by hand in red gold with each tree measuring a mere 0.2mm.
