The Rec Spec White Sunray is a tribute to the MACV-SOG watches of the 1960s. It features fluorescent white indexes and hands, using Super-Luminous Green to replicate the original radioactive Tritium paint used in the 1967 version. The watch sports a dark-gray sunray dial, which, despite its shiny finish typically being associated with dress watches, was chosen to echo the original MACV-SOG designs.
The watch has a 38mm case size combined with a 4-hour integrated crown placement, ensuring excellent wearability in all conditions, whether in the field or off. The integrated crown design not only protects it from being pulled out inadvertently but also reduces the overall wrist presence for a more streamlined look.
Powered by the robust NH36 TMI movement, the Rec Spec OG Sunray offers a 40-hour power reserve, hacking, and a day-date complication, mirroring the functionality of the original 1960s versions.
The Rec Spec project began after meeting John “Tilt” Stryker Meyer, a former MACV-SOG member. He explained how the unit sourced local Seiko watches from Vietnamese markets. These watches, initially sold as dress watches, proved effective as field watches for elite units in Vietnam, giving the MACV-SOG watches their unique appearance compared to traditional US military watches of the 1960s. The Rec Spec, short for “Reconnaissance Spec,” honors the men and equipment used to gather valuable intelligence behind enemy lines.
