Ulysse Nardin FREAK [S NOMAD]

At this year’s Watches and Wonders Geneva event, Ulysse Nardin, known for its independent spirit and innovative approach, unveils the latest iteration of its iconic Freak timepiece: the Freak [S NOMAD]. This limited edition watch, limited to just 99 pieces, exemplifies the brand’s commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring new territories within the watchmaking world.

At first glance, the Freak [S NOMAD] appears like a fantastical spaceship, owing to its unconventional movement design. The heart of this timepiece is the Calibre UN-251 Manufacture movement, characterized by a flying carousel that rotates around its axis. This movement features two silicon balance wheels inclined at 20 degrees, resembling launch pads, and escapements treated with high-tech DIAMonSIL for enhanced precision and durability. Linked by a vertical differential system mounted on ball bearings, the movement also features Ulysse Nardin’s innovative Grinder® winding system, ensuring efficient automatic winding.

The watch’s 45mm case is a blend of experimental materials, including titanium for the main body, an anthracite PVD-coated titanium bezel, and carbon fiber flanks serving as lugs. The timepiece comes with a choice of two straps: an anthracite rubber ‘ballistic’ strap or a matt anthracite alligator strap revealing sand-colored calfskin leather accents.

Despite its avant-garde design, the Freak [S NOMAD] pays homage to traditional watchmaking craftsmanship. A notable example is the hour disc, which sits behind the carousel movement. Each disc is decorated with a diamond guilloché pattern finished in sand-colored CVD, reminiscent of sand dunes. Made by skilled artisans using an 18th-century rose engine, this process requires an extraordinary level of concentration and precision, emphasizing the enduring value of hand craftsmanship in an increasingly digital world.

Innovative features of the Freak S Nomad include its absence of a traditional dial, hands, and crown. Instead, the movement is showcased under a sapphire crystal, minutes are indicated by a pointer on the flying carousel, and hours are displayed on a rotating disc beneath the movement. Additionally, the watch incorporates Super-LumiNova® coating on the hour and minute indicators, emitting a blue glow in low-light conditions.
