The “Mesure du Temps 1787” collection by Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud marks a new era in high-end horology. Inspired by Ferdinand Berthoud’s 1787 treatise on time measurement, this collection introduces a fully reimagined architecture that places the movement on full display dial-side. Chapter 1 unveils the Chronomètre FB 2TV, powered by the new Calibre FB-T V.FC, a successor to the iconic FB-T.FC. Retaining the hallmark fusee-and-chain mechanism and tourbillon, the movement evolves into a flying tourbillon configuration, eliminating the upper bridge for a more open, architectural aesthetic. This transparent construction highlights the intricate choreography of 1,240 components, all carefully hand-finished over nearly 300 hours.
Precision remains central to this innovation, with two advanced complications enhancing chronometric performance. The stop-seconds (balance-stop) mechanism halts the entire movement for exact time-setting, while a highly complex flyback-type zero-resetting system allows the central seconds hand to reset instantly, even while running. Unlike traditional chronograph flyback systems, this mechanism operates within the tourbillon and fusee-and-chain architecture, requiring exceptional engineering. A specially designed titanium filamentary hand absorbs the reset force without vibration, ensuring flawless precision. These features reflect six years of intensive research and development, pushing the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking.
Further amendments improve both performance and efficiency. The redesigned fusee geometry, enhanced stopwork system, and new planetary differential ensure constant torque and uninterrupted operation during winding. Power reserve increases to 60 hours, with fewer crown turns required. Visually, the 44 mm white gold case with domed sapphire crystals shows the movement’s depth and complexity, while the off-centre dial, blue CVD-coated hands, and suspended power-reserve cone maintain exceptional legibility. Limited only by production capacity of 10 to 12 pieces per year.
