CODE41 surprises the watchmaking world with a new model of mechanical beauty with the Mecascape Sublimation One in Grade 5 titanium.
Despite appearances, the CODE41 Mecascape “Sublimation One” is neither an expansion of a watch nor the flattening of a clock. Instead, aside from precision and cleverness, it is, first and foremost, a space that opens up a new type of creative freedom in watchmaking, a fresh, unusual, singular, and hitherto unknown space for expression.
This new mechanical sculpture, dubbed ‘Mecascape,’ – a play on the two words “mechanical” and “landscape” – is all about balance and harmony. CODE41 has taken a completely different approach to watchmaking. They have regarded the timepiece as a whole, with a fully visible mechanism, put on a flat surface with a look whose complexity grows exponentially.
To reinvent the wheel or, in this case, watchmaking, it was necessary to deconstruct space and its measurements and reinterpret proportions. The CODE41 Mecascape’s flat case is a new model of mechanical beauty with an elegance that reflects both purity and class. The space available is more generous than those provided by a watch or a clock, requiring particular skills. Everything is a matter of perception levels, reliefs, shadows, and light.
The CODE41 Mecascape “Sublimation One”
CODE41 faced many technical challenges in its journey to bring the Mecascape to life, including the massive case size, complex machine calibration, and structural integrity.
The uniqueness of the timepiece stems from the fact that, as usual, CODE41 does things differently. They have done the exact opposite of what is typically done in the watchmaking world. Through the assembly of the components, they have brought out the spatial volumes by extending and refining the object as a whole. The originality of its flat movement and its purpose have all been entirely rethought technically.
The Mecascape “Sublimation One” is the result of a new kind of creativity in which the mechanics fit the design and not the other way around. CODE41 and its founder Claudio d’Amore have succeeded in developing a new type of mechanical object, free from scales and proportions, expressing and surpassing normal spatial volumes.
A Novel Approach to Watchmaking
Claudio D’Amore, founder and CEO of the Swiss brand CODE41, sees the Mecascape as the result of his experience as a designer for the top watch brands and as the founder of CODE41 – a magnificent object that combines everything he hoped to express: a different kind of watchmaking in spirit and approach.
This first Mecascape is emotional, with greater volumes and space than a traditional watch or clock, where the mechanics are ultra-compact. The idea first came to Claudio in 2009, and when you hear him speaking about its development, you can not help but feel his pride. He has achieved the osmosis he was looking for, between his faith in the purity of lines, his passion for contemporary design, his taste for architecture, and a sensitive, pure intuition nourished by his Italian roots.
Claudio D’Amore, founder and CEO of CODE41, comments: “My idea for the Mecascape goes back to 2009, more than 12 years ago. Today, after having founded CODE41, given birth to 6 collections, and dedicated 5 years of focused development to the project, the time has come, the maturity and the means too, to give birth to the first Mecascape. I knew, with the team, from the outset that we were working on something really special. An ambitious and daring project in every sense of the word. Translating my vision into a unique and original watch object was a real collective challenge, and we are all very proud of the result. Working with time from all angles (and that’s the right word here) has rarely been so rewarding.”
Fundamental Principles
The Mecascape “Sublimation One” is made of the highest quality titanium used in watchmaking, Grade 5 titanium. Conceived and designed according to the Golden Ratio 1.618 and the Fibonacci sequence, this first Mecascape is visually balanced, harmonious, racy, contemporary, aesthetic, and geometric, thanks to the harmony and natural beauty of its divine proportions.
Its components, shape, movement, and exterior resound in a spirit of remarkable seeming simplicity. At only 7mm thick, it is small enough to fit into a jacket pocket and be carried with you. Its horizontal shape, like a small timeless mechanical sculpture in concept and execution, allows it to be put on a piece of furniture or a desk, allowing you to contemplate and appreciate time in a very contemporary way.
If the complicated mechanical magic of the balance, barrel, escapement, and gears is evident at a glance, reading the time remains easy. The hour counter, minute counter, seconds counter, second-time zone with a global map in the GMT disc, and power reserve indicator combine balance and legibility. Two little knurled crowns on each side, tastefully integrated into the design, enabling the time to be set and the Mecascape to be wound mechanically in a simple and pleasant action.
The entire “landscape” of the Mecascape is protected by anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and its robust Grade 5 titanium case back prevents case twisting and ensures a sturdy mechanical object suitable for everyday life. With a small opening – like a porthole – also in sapphire crystal, you can see part of the plate and some of the movement’s gears. The solid case back also allows the Mecascape to be set upright on a piece of furniture or a desk using a stand, or you can just lay it down on your desk as is.
Accessories and Variations
The first Mecascape will be available in several color variations, ranging from black and red to blue and green. It will come with two accessories: a metal stand that allows it to be positioned vertically and a travel case made of high-quality Italian leather lined with microfiber with a small cut-out to elegantly store a bank card or business card.
