History of Arnold & Son

John Arnold was a British watchmaker (1736-1799) whose technical skills enabled the quantity production of marine chronometers. He also played a central role in addressing the problem of longitude. The brand was relaunched in 1995 in Swizerland’s La Chaux-de-Fonds and by 2010 is a fully integrated manufacture developing and producing its own in-house movements.

John Arnold invented the overcoil balance spring which is still found in most wristwatches today.

Arnold presented one of his inventions — the smallest repeating watch ever made and fitted into a ring — to King George III, which brought him a string of wealthy clients.

John Arnold was a close friend of Abraham-Louis Breguet.

Napoleon Bonaparte presented an Arnold Clock to the Milan Observatory in 1902.
