Bell & Ross revisits its roots with this new interpretation of its iconic watch – BR 03-92 HUD

The inspiration

The BR 03-92 HUD is a part of the Bell & Ross Instruments collection, which is directly inspired by the aeronautical navigation displays of aircraft cockpits. The first BR 01 was unveiled in 2005 and took its inspiration from the cockpit clocks of the 1970s airplanes. Over the years, Bell & Ross continued explored navigation instruments and further developed this collection so that all of the models make up the instrument panel of an aircraft.

BR 03-92 HUD

Continuing the navigational instrument theme, the watchmakers at Bell & Ross turned their attention to the Head Up Display, also known as HUD, for the Br 03-92 HUD. The HUD is the transparent glass screen in an aircraft that displays all the essential information needed for a successful mission. Its primary function is to keep the pilot focused on the target without having to take their eyes off the line of sight. The HUD displays digital date onto the windshield so the pilots can instantly see any change in, for example, the horizon line, altitude, or navigation speed. It is similar to what we have in modern cars today.

The BR 03-92 embodies what Bell & Ross are all about. The 42mm black matte ceramic case features the iconic “circle in a square” that refers to the silhouette of an aircraft cockpit clock. A Green-tinted sapphire crystal glass covers the black dial reminiscent of the digital HUD displays. Four brackets are visible on the four corners of the dial – a further nod to the HUD display line of sight. The center parts of the hands are purposely in black to further increase the digital analogy of professional aeronautical instruments. A green triangle marker indicates the hours on an independent turning concentric disc.

To provide the intense green light, Superluminova C3 covers the hours numerals, indices, the triangle, the minute circle, and hands. Combined with the green-tinted glass, there is a real emphasis put on the ultra-legibility of this watch, and it proves just as readable as an actual HUD display.
