Louis Moinet revisits the legendary Valjoux 88 with the SPEED OF SOUND, presented in three ultra-limited editions of only three watches each. At its core is a historic 1940s chronograph calibre, reworked and elevated for a bold modern context. The project pairs high watchmaking with modern design codes and rare extraterrestrial materials. Each version, orange, green, or black, delivers a strong visual identity while preserving the technical soul of the original movement, giving collectors a fresh and highly distinctive interpretation of a classic engine.
One of the most striking upgrades is the completely redesigned moon display. A large, slightly domed disc shows a hand-drawn luminous lunar motif and incorporates a real fragment of the Dhofar 457 lunar meteorite. Two indicators at 3 and 9 o’clock mark the full-moon position when aligned with the meteorite insert. The traditional date scale has been removed to keep the layout clean and forward-looking. Guilloché dials, cut on historic engine-turning machines, produce deep, shifting reflections, while the chronograph counter and small seconds register use Aletai iron meteorite, adding texture and a subtle cosmic signature.
The Speed of Sound is housed in a lightweight 40 mm grade 5 titanium case with a pronounced sapphire dome that enhances dial depth and visibility. Openworked lugs flow directly into a rubber strap for a sporty, technical stance. On the reverse, the movement is decorated with intricate hand engraving featuring lace-like scrolls and floral curves. A dedicated chronograph scale allows the wearer to calculate the speed of sound, transforming a dramatic natural moment, like lightning and thunder, into a measurable event.
