Introducing Raketa’s iconic model, the Big Zero, now rendered with a modern twist: a chic black dial offset by brilliant white numerals. A vibrant superluminova finish on the hands and prominent numerals ensure that the watch’s minimalist yet bold design remains visible, even in the dark.
The Big Zero stands out not just for its origins in the Soviet era but also for its ability to transcend time, capturing global admiration. While it may not align with traditional definitions of “classic,” its unparalleled charm and enduring allure firmly place it among Raketa’s timeless classics. Raketa’s seasoned experts believe that marking the inception of time from zero is inherently logical. It’s a testament that everything, including time itself, starts from the beginning – zero.
Championing this revolutionary concept, the Big Zero watch stands as a testament to innovative time-telling, boldly challenging the universally accepted “12” on the dial. Its distinctive design philosophy resonated deeply with watch enthusiasts globally, cementing its status and earning it the affectionate nickname “Big Zero.”
Flipping the watch over reveals intricate engravings that showcase the beautifully decorated Raketa automatic movement. While the face is dominated by the stark contrast of black and white, the back of the watch exudes Raketa’s hallmark red, evident in the rotor and strap lining.
Raketa’s story begins in 1961 in Petrodvorets, near Saint Petersburg, as a successor to the Imperial Peterhof Factory established in 1721. The name “Raketa” (Russian for “Rocket”) was inspired by Yuri Gagarin’s historic spaceflight aboard Vostok 1 in April 1961. This marked a turning point, as Raketa watches became symbols of innovation and industrial prowess. They were produced for civilians and specialized purposes, including military use and Arctic expeditions.
During its peak in the 1970s, Raketa was among the world’s largest watch manufacturers, producing around five million mechanical watches annually. Iconic models like the “Big Zero,” celebrated for its clean and minimalist design, garnered global acclaim.
After the fall of the Soviet Union, Raketa faced challenges adapting to a market economy. The brand’s fortunes changed in 2010 when David Henderson-Stewart, an English entrepreneur with a passion for watchmaking, spearheaded its revival. Under his leadership, Raketa embraced modern production methods while preserving its heritage, creating in-house movements, and maintaining its iconic design ethos. Today, Raketa continues to produce high-quality mechanical watches with a unique blend of tradition and innovation.
