In a world where the pursuit of the extraordinary reigns supreme, Linde Werdelin introduces Antonio Laureano, affectionately known as Tony, into their exclusive family of explorers. Hailing from the breathtaking coastal town of Nazaré in Portugal, Tony is a young Portuguese big wave surfer whose remarkable skills and unwavering determination have captured the hearts of all who witness his quest to conquer colossal waves.
Linde Werdelin believes in quality over quantity, shaping their approach to selecting those who embody their core values. Welcoming Tony alongside seasoned explorers like Leo Houlding and Jacques de Vos adds a unique facet to Linde Werdelin’s illustrious family of adventurers.
Leo Houlding, a name synonymous with the world of free climbing and exploration, has been an LW explorer since 2007. Recently returning from his latest adventure, free climbing the awe-inspiring 4,000 ft Mount Asgard in Canada, Leo’s remarkable 16-year journey with LW continues to exemplify the true spirit of adventure at Linde Werdelin Jacques de Vos, a self-taught legend in the world of freediving and an award-winning underwater photographer, has also been a longstanding collaborator with Linde Werdelin. His daring escapades, testing the Oktopus family of diving watches in extreme ocean conditions at depths that send chills down your spine.
Linde Werdelin’s decision to embrace a young, big-wave surfer like Antonio Laureano as a new LW explorer is rooted in their profound admiration for those who willingly embrace extreme challenges. Big wave surfers like Tony embody superhuman courage, fearlessly confronting the immense power of the ocean, where the stakes are nothing short of life and death.
Riding massive waves at Nazaré or anywhere else on this planet can be likened to skiing down the perilous slopes of the Matterhorn or Mont Blanc – there is simply no room for error. It’s akin to skiing while an avalanche roars close behind, where a single misstep could spell disaster. These remarkable individuals inspire us with their unparalleled feats and indomitable determination.
Tony’s intimate connection with the waves began at the tender age of four, and at 21, he has dedicated his life to mastering the art of surfing, earning accolades and recognition for his relentless pursuit of conquering the ocean’s mightiest swells. His journey into the heart of the sea has been nothing short of extraordinary. At just 15 years old, he etched his name into the annals of history by becoming the youngest nominee for the WSL XXL Big Wave Awards in The Biggest Wave category. From there, his trajectory only soared as he continued to conquer ever larger waves, fearlessly defying the boundaries of his sport.
In 2020, Antonio Laureano’s name reverberated across the globe as he took on what was claimed to be a towering 101.4-foot wave at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal. If confirmed, this monumental feat will etch his name in the annals of surfing history as the rider of the largest wave ever conquered. Tony Laureano openly acknowledges that fear is an integral part of his craft. He reveals, “Fear for a big wave surfer is essential. It keeps us focused and aware of the potential risks, preparing us for whatever may come.”
“I first experienced the world of big wave surfing when I visited Nazaré in November 2021. I was, and continue to be, awed by the sheer skill and daring this small group of big wave surfers exhibit,” says Jorn Werdelin, owner and co-founder of Linde Werdelin. “This sentiment resonates deeply with the adventurous spirit that both Tony and we embody.”
In the world of exploration, where courage knows no bounds and discovery awaits with every wave, Antonio Laureano is a rising star destined to leave an indelible mark on the world. With Linde Werdelin by his side, the adventure has only just begun.
