Raketa’s Baikonur watch is a space-born tribute with real orbital credentials, created to celebrate 65 years since humanity’s first journey beyond Earth, and the birth of the Raketa name itself, meaning “rocket.” Rather than just borrowing space-age designs, this model is purpose-built for cosmonaut use. Its defining feature is a 24-hour dial split into contrasting light and dark halves, letting wearers instantly read day and night, a crucial distinction when circling the planet.

Functionality drives every major design choice. A secondary crown controls an additional time zone, allowing simultaneous tracking of mission time and home time, a small but meaningful connection to Earth. Because automatic winding performs poorly in zero gravity, the movement is engineered to protect itself: when manually wound, a special mechanism disengages the self-winding system to reduce wear and preserve long-term reliability. A rotating bezel with a solar compass adds a survival tool, offering directional guidance if electronic systems fail after an off-target landing.

The watch is powered by a fully in-house automatic movement made in Saint Petersburg, from components to final assembly. Visible through the caseback, the rotor is decorated with constellation imagery, reinforcing the celestial theme. A Velcro fabric strap fits easily over a spacesuit, while a leather strap is included for terrestrial missions. Practical, mechanical, and proudly cosmic.

Raketa Baikonur

Raketa’s story begins in 1961 in Petrodvorets, near Saint Petersburg, as a successor to the Imperial Peterhof Factory established in 1721. The name “Raketa” (Russian for “Rocket”) was inspired by Yuri Gagarin’s historic spaceflight aboard Vostok 1 in April 1961. This marked a turning point, as Raketa watches became symbols of innovation and industrial prowess. They were produced for civilians and specialized purposes, including military use and Arctic expeditions. During its peak in the 1970s, Raketa was among the world’s largest watch manufacturers, producing around five million mechanical watches annually. Iconic models like the “Big Zero,” celebrated for its clean and minimalist design, garnered global acclaim.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Raketa faced challenges adapting to a market economy. The brand’s fortunes changed in 2010 when David Henderson-Stewart, an English entrepreneur with a passion for watchmaking, spearheaded its revival. Under his leadership, Raketa embraced modern production methods while preserving its heritage, creating in-house movements, and maintaining its iconic design ethos. Today, Raketa continues to produce high-quality mechanical watches with a unique blend of tradition and innovation.
